Management Gold

The Chartered Management Institute’s Management Book of the Year prize was created to honour the best in the field of management writing.  Held in association with the British Library, and sponsored by Henley Business School, this competition aims to celebrate the best of management books published or distributed in the UK; books that have the potential to transform the effectiveness of working managers or equip students for future management roles.

With regard to equipping students for future management roles, it is interesting to note that this award has a Management and Leadership Textbook category.  This title is awarded to the entry that, in the opinion of the judges (but not necessarily our academics), will most effectively support a course of study on a management and leadership topic.  All of these textbooks are available from USW libraries, so please use the links below if you see a title that you think could be useful for you!

Britain in 2015

Updated: January 12, 2015

JPG RGB Small with BorderEvery year the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) publishes the Britain In magazine which reflects on the country’s most important issues, and offers solutions to many of the problems that British society faces.

The 2015 issue is now available in Treforest’s Library and Student Centre, and it showcases ESRC funded research such as:

  • An evaluation of what the results mean after the referendum on Scotland’s independence
  • How the NHS is faring in the face of structural reforms, austerity pressures, costly medical advances and more people living longer
  • Can we learn lessons from the US experience of producing gas by hydraulic fracturing?
  • More of us are living longer; increasing the chance that dementia will affect us in some way – what is being done to meet the challenge?
  • Bingo has a reputation for being a social game but it is now big business throughout the world.

NB. Back copies (2007-) are also available to download.

Dawsonera is currently the University of South Wales’ main supplier of electronic library books, including many key titles of particular interest to the Business School’s staff, students and researchers.

All titles can be read online, but did you know that there is also an option to download for offline reading? In effect, this allows you to virtually ‘borrow’ the book for a 24 hour period, which could be useful, for example, if would like to study whilst you are on a long train/plane/bus journey.

It is easy to download eBooks on to a laptop or PC, but if you would like to download to a device, you will need to change a couple of settings. Full instructions are available for both Android and Apple devices.

I hope this Dawsonera upgrade will useful for your studies, and if you are part of the Business School, please feel free to contact me any time if you have any questions about the university’s electronic books collection.
